The HMMWV light utility vehicle forms a vehicular backbone of the US forces. It was adopted back in the 1980s. Overall this vehicle recommended itself well. However military conflicts revealed that these utility vehicles suffer from lack of protection. In the early 1990s the US military for a more protected HMMWV. The AM General began production of this improved and uparmored model in 1995. In 1996 the US Army purchased this new version of the HMMWV, based on improved chassis. Initial order was for 390 vehicles for operations in Bosnia. This light protected vehicle was adopted as the M1114. Currently it is widely used by the US Army. The M1114 has been exported to Afghanistan (950), Bulgaria (50), Iraq, and possibly some other countries.

The M1114 is based on the M1113 expanded capacity HMMWV. This chassis along with more powerful engine allowed to handle add-on armor. The M1114 is fitted with add-on armor kit which provides protection against 7.62 mm armor-piercing rounds and artillery shell splinters. It withstands mine blasts equivalent to 5.4 kg of TNT at the front and equivalent to 1.8 kg of TNT at the rear.

Originally it was planned that uparmored HMMWVs will be used by the US military only as a stop gap measure, until a better protected Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) becomes operational. The HMMWV was never designed to be an armored combat and patrol vehicle, however it is being employed as one. Full-scale production of the JLTV is planned to begin in 2019.

The baseline M1114 is a weapon carrier. It has a shielded machine gun position on the roof. This vehicle is typically armed with an M2 12.7 mm heavy machine gun. This vehicle accommodates driver and 3 passengers. It can also carry light cargo. Furthermore the M1114 can tow M1101, M1102, or similar trailers, as well as light artillery pieces, such as 120 mm mortars.

The M1114 is based on improved chassis with stronger suspension. Vehicle is also fitted with larger and more powerful engine. It is powered by a Detroit Diesel 6.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 190 hp. Engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Vehicle has a full-time all-wheel drive. The uparmored vehicle retains tactical mobility and cross-country mobility. As well as the previous HMMWVs the M1114 has a wide track, which was specially designed to drive in tracks left by the main battle tanks. Vehicle is fitted with a central tyre inflation system, which is adjusted from the driver's station to suit various terrain conditions. It also comes with run-flat tyre. The uparmored HMMWV can be fitted with a deep-water fording kit for fording water obstacles up to 1.5 m deep.
